neu|ron

neu|ron
neu|ron «NUR on, NYUR-», noun.
one of the cells of which the brain, spinal cord, and nerves are composed; nerve cell. Neurons conduct impulses and consist of a cell body containing the nucleus, and usually several processes called dendrites, and a single long process called an axon. »

To excite or “fire” a neuron, the nerve impulse has to cross the synapse, and it is probable that two or more impulses have to summate in space and time in order to “fire” a neuron (George M. Wyburn).

Also, neurone.
[< New Latin neuron < Greek neûron sinew, nerve]
